How to Use the Legal Glossary on Legalise: A Practical Tutorial
The legal glossary on Legalise contains hundreds of statutory definitions drawn from 58 major Pakistani statutes. This tutorial explains how to search it, how to browse by statute, and how to integrate it into drafting and hearing preparation workflows.
Step 1: Sign In and Access the Glossary
The glossary is available to all signed-in users without a paid subscription. After signing in, navigate to the Legal Glossary from the main navigation or the homepage. The glossary loads with a search bar and a full list of available statutes for browsing.
Step 2: Search by Term
To find the statutory definition of a specific term, type it into the search bar. The glossary returns the definition along with the source statute and section number where that definition appears. This is the fastest way to retrieve the authoritative meaning of a term that appears in a document, judgment, or client instruction.
Both Urdu legal terms and English statutory terms are searchable. If the exact term used in a specific statute differs from the common usage of a word, the glossary entry will reflect the statutory version and cite the source provision.
Step 3: Browse by Statute
The glossary also supports browsing by statute. Selecting a statute from the available list displays all defined terms within that Act in one view. This is particularly useful when beginning work on a matter governed by a specific Act and a quick orientation to its defined terms is needed before reviewing the full text.
For example, if the matter involves a dispute under the Transfer of Property Act, browsing the Transfer of Property Act in the glossary shows all terms defined in that Act in a single browsable list. This gives an immediate picture of the statutory vocabulary that will govern the matter.
Step 4: Cross-Reference With the Statutes Library
When a glossary definition references a specific section of an Act, that section can be opened directly in the Pakistan Statutes Library, which is also accessible on the platform. The glossary gives the definition; the statutes library gives the full legislative context surrounding it. Using both together is more effective than either alone when the precise scope of a statutory definition is at issue.
Step 5: Use It Alongside Drafting
The most effective place for the glossary in a drafting workflow is alongside the Generate Document tool. When selecting the terms to use in a specific clause, checking whether a term has a defined meaning in the relevant Act ensures that the document's language is consistent with the statute it references. Using a term in a deed that has a narrower or broader statutory definition than intended can affect the legal effect of the clause.
Step 6: Use It for Hearing Preparation
In hearing preparation, the glossary is a quick check on the statutory meaning of terms that opposing counsel or a witness may be using in a particular way. If the dispute turns on the interpretation of a defined statutory term, having the exact wording of the definition at hand before the hearing allows for a precise argument rather than a general one.
What the Glossary Does Not Cover
The glossary contains statutory definitions only. Terms that are not defined within a specific statute but are used in case law or common legal usage are not included. For those terms, the IHC case law database is a better starting point. The glossary also does not include procedural guidance or commentary on statutory provisions; it provides the text of the definition as enacted in the relevant statute.
